Led by EMYJO bass player Tom Bunting, Bird Food are a young band specialising in the music of Ornette Coleman. Since playing at the Derby Jazz Festival in 2008 they've been active in the clubs of Birmingham and have developed a video/slide show alongside the music. Jan Kopinski knows Ornette's music intimately and has taken part in his Prime Time workshop. He has also played with his son, the drummer DENARDO COLEMAN who sat in with Pinski Zoo at the Jazz Cafe in its early days. He's also been creating music and film projects for several years. This concert is part of the EMJazz Rhythm-A-Ning project which creates partnerships between developing bands from the East Midlands and more experienced major artists.

Finalist in the 2008 Nottingham National jazz piano competition Sam Hogarth appearing at the Bonington theatre as an addition to the current programme.

He will perform two short sets between each of the advertised sessions of "Bird Food"

Sam Hogarth has performed at many of London's top jazz venues, including the Pizza Express Jazz Club, the Vortex and Smollensky's, and as a guest artist at Smalls in New York. He was a finalist at the 2008 Nottingham Jazz Piano Competition and two of his originals were featured in the 2007 Paramount film A Mighty Heart, starring Angelina Jolie. His first album, song for someone (2004), led him to engagements at Westminster Palace, St Paul's Cathedral and the Ivy restaurant. His second album, While We're Young, with vocalist Aisling Lavelle, is released in summer 2009. Sam is also an active composer and conductor and is currently a repetiteur at the National Opera Studio.
