Asaf Sirkis "Letting Go"
Review by Trudie Squires

THIS trio, led by ex-Gilad Atzmon drummer Asaf Sirkis, described its music as "guitar-led power fusion." The guitar was in the hands of Tassos Spilotopolous - a musician of Greek origin. The band's title, "Letting Go" was appropriate; instantly creating a relaxed mood with brand new but very accessible music, which, though highly innovative was very easy on the ear. Spilotopolous was a guitarist capable of producing pure golden tones in the most laid-back and soulful manner. He used modern technology via his array of foot pedals to produce stratospheric solos and great crescendos of sound. Bassist was Jonathan Harvey playing a magnificent six-string bass guitar and supplying mesmerising, nimble-fingered bottom lines and impressive solos. The group, however, was a showcase for Sirkis' phenomenal percussive skills. From whispering brushwork, clattering snare and sonorous side drums he played with fire and passion when it was needed and became an unobtrusive accompanist behind his soloists. The music was all original material from the group's widely sought-after albums; Other Stars And Planets and Full Moon were direct links to Asaf's other passion for astrology. However the musicians' jazz pedigree was confirmed when they finished with Sam Rivers' Beatrice - a swinging standard that sent everyone home happy.
